Need my partner to hear Reaper file for mixing purposes

  • Dear Nigel,

Thank you for your question. To have your writing partner and yourself listen together in FarPlay to a Reaper mix of previously recorded audio files, do the following.

    1. Uninstall VB Cable. Reboot. Reinstall VB Cable. Reboot. Earlier tonight, I wasn’t able to get audio from Reaper, through VB Cable, into FarPlay on my Windows PC. Now I can, after reinstalling VB Cable.
    2. Set up Reaper to send the mix you’re working on to FarPlay:

      • In Reaper Preferences > Device > Audio device settings, set Audio system to WASAPI and Mode to Shared mode. Leave Input device as Default input. Set Output device to CABLE Input (VB-Audio Virtual Cable). Set Input channels to 0 (disabled) and Output channels to 2. Set Block size to 1024 samples. Click OK.
      • Create a parent track (“Full mix” in the example below). Under this parent track, create child tracks, one for each vocal or instrumental audio file you’ve recorded (the screenshot below shows an example with two child tracks).
      • For the parent track, click the ROUTE button. In the “Routing for track 1: … (folder)” window, use the Audio Hardware Outputs pull-down menu to choose 1: Output 1 / Output 2. Close the “Routing for track 1: … (folder)” window.
    3. Use FarPlay’s Input Mixer to bring both your Behringer’s audio and the Reaper mix into FarPlay:

      • In a FarPlay session, go to the Devices subpanel. Use the Microphone pull-down menu to choose Input Mixer.
      • Set the Mixer Output to Stereo.
      • For track 1, set the audio device to your Behringer’s ASIO drivers (you should see Behringer USB ASIO, UMC ASIO, or something like that where my screenshot says “Micropho”). If there isn’t a second track, press the circled plus to create a second track. For track 2, set the audio device to CABLE Output (VB-Audio Virtual Cable). Set the channel selector for track 1 to 1 (mono channel 1). Set the channel selector for track 2 to 1-2 (stereo).
      • Under You (…), raise your local monitor (for example, to 0 dB).
    4. You and your writing partner should be able to hear the mix from Reaper. If not, fix Windows sound settings:

      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Sound. Click More Sound Settings (Windows 11) or Sound Control Panel (Windows 10).
      • In the Playback tab, double-click CABLE Input. Go to Levels and make sure the level slider is dragged all the way to the right and the speaker icon isn’t muted. Go to the Advanced tab. Set the Default Format to 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality). Under Exclusive Mode, uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. Press OK.
      • In the Recording tab, double-click CABLE Output. Go to Levels and make sure the level slider is dragged all the way to the right and the speaker icon isn’t muted. Go to the Advanced tab. Set the Default Format to 2 channel, 16 bit, 48000 Hz (DVD Quality). Under Exclusive Mode, uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device. Press OK and then press OK again.

Note: This solution uses VB-Cable because one copy of FarPlay cannot get audio from your Behringer’s ASIO drivers and ReaRoute ASIO at the same time (FarPlay can only use one ASIO device at a time).

    Thank you,
    David Liao
