Dear Andy,
Thanks for your message.
To fix audio coming only through your left ear, go to Preferences
> General Options. In the “Headphones” row, make sure “Stereo” (not “Mono”) and “channels 1-2” are selected.

If you still hear another musician only through your left ear, ask them to use the Channels: pull-down menu under You (…) to select Mono Mix (or Mono 1, if Mono Mix is unavailable).

The instructions above are also available in our Troubleshooting Guide, in the item “Hear other person only in my left ear”.
To fix distortion, check out the “Audio is distorted or stops working” section of our Troubleshooting Guide. Have your friend follow those instructions too. Each of you should click the “Change computer” or “Change audio” buttons in the Troubleshooting Guide, as needed to select the equipment you’re using.
Highlights:
-
Make sure each person uses Ethernet to connect their computer to the router that receives the internet signal where it first enters the home (avoid wireless repeater/extender routers and Ethernet-over-power adapters), turn Wi-Fi off.
-
Turn VPN off.
-
Adjust the latency slider (see our video tutorial). If the latency slider is too far to the left, there might be excessive crackling.
-
Increase Audio Buffer Size in Preferences > General Options (for example, from 16 to 64 on a Mac or from Default to 480, if using built-in audio on a Windows PC).
-
Turn Windows Signal Enhancements off (if your partner uses Windows).
For each Mac, open a FarPlay video chat, click the green camera in the menu bar to find the Mic Mode (if the Mic Mode isn’t in the green camera’s menu, click the control center), and make sure the Mic Mode is Standard, not Voice Isolation.
To make sure your sound is loud enough for your partner,
-
Follow the steps in section 3 (Configure and test your audio) of our QuickStart guide, and ask your partner to separately do the same. These instructions explain how to change your mic’s input level in Mac sound settings. To see the version of the QuickStart guide customized for your equipment or your partner’s equipment, click the buttons under “Step Zero: Choose Your Setup”, as needed.
-
If adjusting FarPlay settings isn’t enough to make sound in headphones loud enough, try pressing increase-volume keys on keyboards and using headphone-volume knobs/buttons on headsets, microphones, or audio interfaces.
Thank you,
David Liao
