Mac Sequoia Connection Issues
-
Anybody else who owns a MAC and recently upgraded to Sequoia and was unable to connect on FarPlay today? I see on the internet several people having firewall connection issues. I tried both with and without firewall. HALP!

Hi,
I’m also experiencing the same problem after updating my mac to Sequoia. My firewall is turned off, but I get the same error message as the OP.
I’ll keep an eye on the forum for any advice or updates.
Thanks very much!Dear Friends,
Sequoia has apparently introduced networking issues (for multiple apps, not just FarPlay).
To fix connectivity for FarPlay, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security. Choose Local Network. Click the toggle switch to give FarPlay permission.
If this doesn’t fix connectivity for you, please let us know.
Thank you,

I couldn’t find Far Play on my local network. What should I do?

Hi Alexander,
If FarPlay is already working fine for you on Sequoia, you don’t need to give FarPlay “Local Network” permission. (This was an issue affecting just some users).
Are you able to connect to other musicians?
Thank you,
David LiaoI have gave FarPlay “Local Network” permission, but I get the same error message as the OP.
Dear Albert,
Thank you for your message. Do you remember whether the last line of the error message you saw was “(Local / remote network status: NAT / NAT)”, instead of “(Local / remote network status: Symmetric NAT / NAT)” or “(Local / remote network status: NAT / Symmetric NAT)”? Could you share the name of the internet provider at each end of the attempted connection? Please have each musician turn off firewalls on their computer (Mac and Windows both offer firewalls, and third-party security software like Norton does too).
Thank you,

(Local / remote network status: NAT / Symmetric NAT)

Dear Albert,
Thanks for the screenshot. If the other participant is using 5G/4G cellular internet service or an institutional (university/corporate) network, please ask them to switch to a landline home internet connection (fiber, cable, or vDSL), if available. Ask them to turn VPN off too, if used.
If you still get the same error, set up port forwarding on your end or have the remote participant ask their internet provider for a “Public IP”. If you’d like help with port forwarding, could you share the model of your router?
“NAT / Symmetric NAT” means the other participant is using a restrictive network.
Thank you,

Hi David,
I have the same issue as Alexander – FarPlay simply doesn’t appear on my list of apps listing on/off switches for permission under “Local Network.” It DOES appear in the nearby permission categories of Camera and Microphone, and as expected the permissions are set to “on.”
Thanks!
Dan InglisHi Dan,
Are you able to connect to a FarPlay session? If so, it’s OK for your Mac’s Local Network permissions page not to list FarPlay. Granting FarPlay Local Network permission was a fix that some Mac users needed several months ago when Sequoia first came out.
If you’re getting a NAT connection error message, could you share a screenshot (and indicate whether the screenshot is from your computer or a remote computer)? We have suggestions for fixing NAT connection errors; I’d also be happy to provide customized suggestions based on the specific error message, if any, you see.
Thank you,

Hi David,
Thank you! I AM able to start a session at least by myself. Without my client on the other side, I can’t tell whether I’ll have the same problem I had during our lesson today. To paraphrase, IIRC it said ~’can’t connect the two of you’ but I was able to connect to a session. I’ll return if I can duplicate this bug another day.
Thanks,
DanHi Dan,
If you’re able to connect with most people, but ran into this connection problem with one client, I’d recommend using custom ports on your end (I can help with this). Another option is to ask the client whether they can try connecting from a fiber or cable connection from home (if they’re currently trying to connect from a university/workplace network or 5G cellular network).
Some universities/workplaces and 5G cellular providers use restrictive networks that prevent the peer-to-peer (p2p) connections FarPlay relies on. Using custom ports lets you connect with musicians on these networks and is recommended for teachers.
Thank you,
