Thanks for your question! A Shure SM57 works great. A friend got two SM57s for an audition with an upright bass, and they were really happy with the setup. (They got two mics and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 with two mic inputs so they could use one of the mics for talking).

To hear how an upright bass sounds through an SM57, check out this YouTube video, which also demonstrates the Sennheiser e609, another great option (I don’t have a preference between the two mics myself — I’d go with whichever is available).
