Hi John,
How far are you from the musicians you’d like to practice with? Depending on distance and the styles of music you’d like to practice, your connection might be OK.
- Go ahead and do a test session with someone with your existing connection. If the latency isn’t low enough, use an Ethernet cable, instead of the point-to-point connection, to connect your practice room to the router that receives the internet signal where the signal first enters the main home.
- If the latency is still too high, switch from Starlink to fiber (best) or cable (works too).
Point-to-point wireless is iffy. I tech-supported a site that used point-to-point wireless to connect the main router in one building with another nearby building, and the latency would sometimes jump. Switching to an Ethernet connection eliminated the problem.
Starlink is also iffy. On the one hand, I’ve heard of a musician being able to use it with FarPlay. On the other hand, I tech-supported a Starlink user who had too much latency to play together with their friend ~1,600 miles away.
Thank you,
David Liao
