FarPlay picks up background noise (traffic, air conditioning, heating, landscaping) even though Skype, Zoom, and other conventional chat/conferencing applications don’t.

FarPlay transmits a pristine copy of the audio you give it, including all noise. This is by design, so that every element of the music comes through.
If noise is bothersome, switching to a highly directional microphone like the Shure SM58 https://www.amazon.com/Shure-SM58-LC-Cardioid-Dynamic-Microphone/dp/B000CZ0R42 can help (you can use an alternative model—just make sure to look for the important word “cardioid”).
To use a directional microphone to reject noise from a window air conditioning unit, face the air conditioning unit. Place the microphone between the air conditioning unit and you (with the microphone aimed as shown in figures at https://farplay.io/setup-interface/). Bring the microphone close to you (reducing gain as needed to avoid clipping).
