Network connection issue with ethernet
-
I keep getting a notification that there is a network connection issue even though I am connected via ethernet cable.
I tested out my connection by trying to access the internet and it worked fine. Not sure why it is having an issue with connecting to farplay.

Dear NewCreation Baldwin,
Thanks for your message. If you keep getting an error message that says “FarPlay couldn’t connect to the network. Please check your internet connection and try again.” when you open the FarPlay app without trying to connect to anyone, try the first suggestion below. If that doesn’t work, try the next suggestion, and so on.
- Make sure your computer’s Wi-Fi’s off.
- Check that your computer’s firewall’s off:
- On a Mac, go to System Settings > Network, click Firewall and make sure the toggle switch is in the off position.
- on Windows, go to Start > Settings > Privacy & Security > Windows Security, click Open Windows Security, choose Firewall & network protection. In each of Domain network, Private network, and Public network, flick the Microsoft Defender Firewall switch to off. If your IT administrator doesn’t let you turn your PC’s firewall off, go to Windows Security’s Firewall & network protection page, click Allow an app through firewall, and add FarPlay to the list of allowed apps. See the video tutorial here.
- Turn your computer’s VPN off, if used (instructions for Mac and Windows).
- Reboot your computer and router.
If the FarPlay app opens without an error, but you get an error message that says “FarPlay couldn’t establish a connection between you and other participants. See here for information about managing firewalls.” when you try to connect with someone, try the following, and have the other participant try the following too.
- If either of you uses a Mac, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security. If there’s a Local Network section, click it and then flick FarPlay‘s permission switch on.
- If that doesn’t help, try the steps in the first list of suggestions (above).
- Check that each side is using a fiber or cable internet connection (instead of 5G cellular internet).
- If the error message says “(Local / remote network status: Symmetric NAT / NAT)”, ask your local IT administrator to let your computer connect to the internet using normal NAT, rather than Symmetric NAT. If the error message says “(Local / remote network status: NAT / Symmetric NAT)”, ask the other participant to try connecting from a different network (home fiber or cable internet connection is best) so they can connect with you and other participants in group sessions.
Thank you,

Hey David, I tried all of these options but unfortunately nothing has helped. I still get the same message that it is unable to connect.
I have turned off firewalls, vpns, ethernet, wireless but nothing seems to change.Thank you for trying the suggestions. Could you share a screenshot of the connection-error message? Also, could you share the type of computer (Mac or PC), the location (a home, an office building, etc.), and the name of the internet service provider?
Thank you,
David LiaoSure! I’m using a Dell laptop in the sound room at church and our wireless provider is Skyline Skybest (local service).

Many thanks for your reply!
- Could you use your Dell laptop (in the church’s sound room, connected by Ethernet, with Wi-Fi off) to open farplay.io in a web browser and share a screenshot?
- Could you email support@farplay.io a photo of the church router (showing where the Ethernet cable from the Dell laptop plugs in)? (I could repost the photo into this thread after blurring private info that might be printed on the router).
- Please check whether your Dell PC has Norton, McAfee, or a similar security app. If so, unblock FarPlay’s access to the internet in the security app either by turning the security app’s firewall off or telling the security app to allow FarPlay to access the internet. If you use Norton, for example, follow Norton’s firewall instructions.
- If FarPlay still can’t connect to the internet, could you write Skyline/Skybest support to ask them to check that they don’t block any of the traffic described in our network requirements?
Interested in how it goes, thank you,

Sure thing. Do you mean just the website where you can download farplay?
Yes 👍, FarPlay’s website, where you can download FarPlay.
Thanks,
David Liao
