I want to hear a drone or click track to help me stay with the beat or in tune, but I don’t want other session participants to hear the drone or click track.
Particularly if you have a vocal microphone that rejects ambient noise well (a Shure SM58 is an example — you have to “eat the mic” to be heard well), the easiest solution by far might be low tech: play the drone or click track at low volume on a phone.
If you’re using an audio interface, you can consult its manual/website to see whether it has built-in loopback/routing features that let you route audio from an application to your headphones mix. If you’re using a Universal Audio Apollo interface, look for “CUE MIX” in the manual.
