Quality degradation

  • Dear Mitchell,

Thank you for your questions. Please try the following at each end (might not need to use all these suggestions):

    • Turn VPN off, if used. VPN reroutes traffic through VPN servers, sometimes adding a lot of latency.
    • Turn the computer’s Wi-Fi off. Sometimes a computer will connect through Wi-Fi (adding a lot of latency) when Wi-Fi is on even though the Ethernet cable is plugged in.
    • If there’s more than one router in the home, plug the computer’s Ethernet cable into the router that receives the internet signal where the signal first enters the home. Plugging the Ethernet cable into a wireless repeater/extender router can add latency.
    • Reboot the router to fix a problem in your router or home internet connection.
    • If using 5G cellular home internet, try switching to fiber (best) or cable internet. I’d expect much better performance from a relatively slow cable connection with only, say, 20 Mbps of upload speed than from a faster 5G connection with 35 Mbps of upload speed. 5G cellular internet can suffer from fluctuating neighborhood network congestion and isn’t recommended.

Check out the “Latency is too high” section of our Troubleshooting Guide for more suggestions.

    Thank you,
    David Liao
