Dear Richard,
Thank you for your message. If you’d like, you can try our suggestions below.
- If there’s an error message when you try to connect with someone, please feel free to share a screenshot.
- If you’re using macOS Sequoia, see our forum thread on fixing network permissions for FarPlay.
- Turn VPN off, if used. Examples of VPNs include Proton VPN, NordVPN, Cisco AnyConnect, and GlobalProtect.
- Turn firewalls off on your computer.
- If your internet service provider offers a “public IP,” subscribe to that service. Otherwise, you’ll need to ask other people you connect to port forward. If you’d like to share your internet service provider’s name, I can check whether they offer a public IP service.
Thank you,
David Liao
Hi David
Thanks for the speedy response
I tried setting up Port Forwarding but it didn’t seem to work we kept getting an unable to connect error message when trying to join my friends session
I have a new direct Ethernet connection to the Gigaclear high speed fibre optic network
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you again
Richard
Dear Richard,
Thank you for your details. Please ask Gigaclear support whether you can get a public IP. If they say no, ask whether you can pay for a static IP, which I think they offer for £2/month.
Our FAQ & Troubleshooting guide includes a suggestion to get a public IP (go to the “We failed to connect …” item in the “Can’t connect” section).
Optional background
FarPlay sends audio and video directly between participants (“peer-to-peer” connectivity). Based on information from a Gigaclear employee, Gigaclear might be using something called CGNAT for your connection. CGNAT can break peer-to-peer connectivity. Getting a “public IP” or “static IP” from your internet provider fixes the problem by getting rid of CGNAT for your connection. Ask about a “public IP” first because a public IP might be less expensive than a static IP.
Thank you,
David Liao
